An Angel Spoke To Me
for Philip J. Carmen

An angel came and spoke to me
She said please don't be sad,
She said don't think about your troubles
For they will make you mad.

She told me to be full of joy
Don't let yourself be lonely,
Don't sit at home and hang your head
For you are not the only.

One in this world who has a care
And a heart that's full of strife,
Don't let your problems get to you
Or they will rule your life.

The angel told me go out and seek
That which you wish to find,
The one thing that will make you happy
And give you peace of mind.

She told me to go out today
And make a brand new friend,
A friendship that will surely last
From now until the end.

And if you're stalwart in your search
I will give to you a sign,
I'll be there to guide you on your way
And help you through all time.

So I went out and began my search
With hopes of finding a clue,
That would tell me exactly where to go
And exactly what to do.

I searched through every forest,
Through every shady lair,
Over every hill and dale
And at every county fair.

I traveled through every country,
I traversed the oceans wide,
Not knowing where the answers lie
Or exactly on which side.

Next, I came upon a river
And crossed to the other shore,
Where I peered through every window
And stood knocking at each door.

When finally one did open
And there appeared a man,
Who said he’d had an amazing dream
In which was contained a plan.

That he should go out today
And journey without end,
Until he came upon a place
Where he would meet a friend.

The plan he said was simple
That he must start by noon,
And travel as far as he could
Before the light of the moon.

Then I told him he was in luck
For that is where I’m headed,
I said you’re welcome to come along
And there’s nothing to be dreaded.

So he gathered up his things
And we started down the road,
‘Til we came upon a clearing
Where we set down our heavy load.

But neither of us were tired
So we sat and talked ‘til night
About the plans we would make
In the morning at first light.

As we slept, we dreamt how each
Of us had helped the other,
In much the very same way
As would our dear, sweet mother.

Upon waking, we suddenly realized
That our journey was at its end,
For what we both had been searching for
We had found in each other — a friend.
